  Biology and Environmental Studies students and faculty present research at Natural History Conference

Belmont biology major April Tummins presented her senior research project at the 13thSymposium on the Natural History of Lower Tennessee and Cumberland River Valleys at Land Between the Lakes on April 3-4, 2009.  Tummins' paper was titled "Water-Use Efficiency in Lonicera maackii and Symphoricarpos orbiculatus in Response to Increasing Light and CO2."  Dr. Steve Murphree, professor in Biology, presented research completed by Andy Wicke, an Environmental Studies major, titled "Macroinvertebrate Diversity and Water Quality at a Trout Hatchery Stream Entering the Obey River, Clay County, Tennessee."  Other Belmont participants included Biology major Julianna Bejma, Environmental Studies major Lindsay Walker, and Dr. Darlene Panvini, associate professor in Biology.   


 
Student Athletes  

Lynette Rives Competes Among Nation's Best at the USA Track and Field Championships  Lynette Rives became the first Belmont athlete in program history to compete in this elite meet held in Eugene, Oregon in June.  Rives finished 20th overall in the 200m event.  Rives, who graduated in May with a B.S. in Biology, holds the distinction of being only the second Belmont track and field athlete to be named All-American and is the first Belmont athlete to compete at back-to-back NCAA Championships in any event.          

Mollie Schlarman Named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team This was the first time in her career for Mollie Schlarman, senior cross country track runner, to receive this honor. Mollie was also named a finalist for 2009 National Student - Athlete Day Giant Steps Award in the category of Courageous Student-Athlete. Schlarman graduated in May 2009 with a B.S. in Biology. 

Andy Wicke Receives NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship  Belmont University men's basketball senior Andy Wicke was awarded a coveted educational grant through the NCAA postgraduate scholarship program.Wicke was one of only two NCAA Division-I men's basketball players chosen to receive this award. Andy received a one-time, nonrenewable grant of $7,500.He earned his undergraduate degree in May with a major in Environmental Studies and minor in Business Administration and plans to attend dental school at the University of Louisville.  Andy was also named Atlantic Sun Conference Male Student-Athlete of the Year. 

Belmont University's 2009 scholar-athletes were honored in a special year-end ceremony.  Several students from the Biology department received awards:

  • Andy Wicke, an Environmental Studies major, was one of the four President's Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
  • Mollie Schlarman, a Biology major, received the Graduating Senior Academic Achievement Award
  • Mollie Schlarman also received the Academic Achievement Award for Women's Cross Country and Women's Track & Field
  • Lauren Oeser, a Biology major, received the Academic Achievement Award for Women's Golf
  • Cyrus Eaton, a Biology major, received the Academic Achievement Award for Men's Soccer
