Explore Ireland!

Cooperative Center for Studies Abroad offers:

Imagining Ireland: The Places of Travel Writing

May 15 – May 30, 2008

3 credit hours

Leprechauns, pubs, and shamrocks may be what first come to mind when we think of Ireland, but this small country actually offers abundant opportunities to examine sociocultural intersections. Imagining ourselves as travel writers, we will explore the cities of Dublin and Galway, and visit the Aran Islands, Boyne Valley, and Wicklow County.  Assigned reading and writing will focus upon the intersections of the historical and the contemporary, village life and city life, and the rural versus the urban.  Undergirding our explorations will be the idea that travel writers produce documents which connect home and away for their readers, thereby positioning travel writing as a significant source of cultural mediation.
